Golden Oldies: Keeping Senior Dogs Happy on Their Walks

Some of my favourite dogs to walk are the older ones. There's a lovely, settled companionship about a senior dog: they've seen it all, they know what they like, and what they like is usually a good sniff and your company. But an ageing dog's walks do need a bit of rethinking, and getting it right adds happy, mobile years to their life.

When is a dog "senior"?

It varies hugely by size. Big breeds age faster and can be seniors by six or seven, while a small terrier might not slow down until double digits. Rather than watching the calendar, watch the dog: stiffness after rest, lagging behind where they used to lead, more panting, or reluctance on stairs are all quiet signs the walks should adapt.

Shorter and more often beats one big trek

The classic mistake with an older dog is the big weekend walk. A long outing followed by two days of stiffness does more harm than good. Older joints do far better with little and often: a couple of shorter, steady walks a day keep muscles working and joints moving without the payback.

A few other adjustments that make a real difference:

Slowing down is normal. Pain is not, and dogs hide it well. Limping, obvious stiffness that doesn't ease after warming up, reluctance to jump into the car, or a dog that suddenly doesn't want walks at all deserves a check-up. Arthritis is very treatable these days, and dogs on the right support often get a real spring back in their step.

The Pawkies bit

We love our golden oldies. Senior dogs on our walks get their own pace, plenty of sniff stops, routes chosen for their joints, and a proper fuss throughout. If your older dog needs a gentle midday leg stretch while you're at work, that's exactly the sort of walk we're happy to shape around them.
